Red Brick Studio is an interdisciplinary design practice focusing on contextually and sustainably appropriate solutions. In today’s pluralistic and rapidly urbanizing cities, the practice explores ideas and ethics rooted in construction techniques, materials and local craft and place.
Our team has built up an exciting and diverse portfolio since 2010. The studio is not inhibited by building type, but rather looks forward to every opportunity of pushing the envelope. Every project is a testimony to our belief that function is purposeful and aesthetic becomes inherent. The studio follows an intensely analytic design approach seeking to strike a balance between client needs and costs, site conditions and programmatic dictates – all in the unyielding pursuit of perfection. We believe that interdisciplinary collaboration is the key to successful design; for which we work with a close-knit group of talented professionals and consultants dedicated to integrating research into the core process of design.
Context
With the constantly changing environment around us, we are aware of the economic, social and environmental consequences of our choices. Our concerted yet frugal approach helps in responding symbiotically and subjectively to the localised context of the problem at hand. The studio works with an intensively “hands-on” approach which results in exploration and experimentation with the vast palette of materials and technologies at hand. Needless to say, these are sieved through the filters of contextual elements the project is responding towards.
Diversity
Over the years, our portfolio spans a variety of typologies, locations and climates across India. From congested city streets to isolated remote villages, every project is a journey into new landscapes and lifestyles that inform and inspire our ideas. A narrative-driven approach to design that engages all the senses is what threads our practice together. Interior design and landscape become a natural extension to our core services and an opportunity for additional positive interventions. Design is never formulaic for us, our designs reflect a strong sense of the client’s identity and individuality even within similar typological or programmatic constraints.
Exploration
In today’s world of scarcity we are not discouraged by constraints of materials, building time, skilled labour, finances or remote locations. We use these as a launching point to focus on finding the solution. High level of sensitivity to the “craft of design” has been the foundation of the studio’s ethos. At the core is the belief in having a contemporary approach that helps re-integrate indigenous knowledge in construction, by identifying native materials, crafts and techniques.
Collaboration
Our approach involves working closely with owners, authorities, professionals and other stakeholders striving for creative designs with error free execution. A cross-pollination of ideas has allowed us to bring fresh and unusual perspectives to projects, and to master new skills that we can apply to the work.
